Ladies Love Cool James… and Dennis, Frank, Sweet Dee, Mac, and of course Charlie. I’m pretty excited for Season 4 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It starts September 18th, 2008 on FX. Some of us here at Songspeak haven’t watched the show much, but others of us are fanatics.
Here’s a promo video they’ve been showing excerpts of on FX. It’s a spoof on LL Cool J’s Going Back to Cali.
Here’s the original video of LL Cool J’s Goin Back to Cali for your comparison viewing pleasure…
Have you noticed lately that LL Cool J sounds and acts like 50Cent on his new song, Baby? What the hell is THAT about?
Oh, and get these digital video discs. They’re wicked good.

On the way to work this morning, I saw an oval euro sticker on a car that said, “Hell and back”. This reminded me of The Darkness song from a few years ago, One Way Ticket to Hell. I enjoy The Darkness and their retro glam metal style and the singer’s ridiculous voice, but I question some of their lyrics.
Don’t get me wrong, “Get your hands off my woman motherfucker” is pure genius and class all the way, but I’m talking more about One Way Ticket to Hell. In the song he says (and repeats numerous times), “I bought a one way ticket to hell…and back!” Now, maybe I’m wrong, but isn’t a one way ticket…you know…ONLY one way? If you bought a one way ticket to hell, you ain’t coming back. Unless you buy a one way ticket back. I mean, maybe he bought a round trip ticket. But I guess “round trip ticket to hell and back” isn’t as catchy. Or maybe he didn’t feel like singing, “I bought a one way ticket to hell…and then decided I’d stayed there long enough so I then went and purchased a one way ticket back to where I originally came from”. I mean, that’s a mouthful for the chorus of a rock song. Or maybe he wrote the song that way on purpose, so people like me would pick it apart and sound like an idiot, and that’s the joke.
Either way, I found the video on youtube. I hadn’t seen it before, and let me just say…wow. Um, I guess it’s no surprise that the lead singer quit the band in 2006 to pursue drug rehab.

John Mayer is sporting a new haircut these days, apparently satisfied with fulfilling his dream of an “authentic ’80s haircut”. From a May 1, 2008 post on his blog:
Today I set off on my newest project; to grow and maintain an authentic ’80s style feathered haircut. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time and I’m very excited to bring this amazing look into today’s pop culture landscape. The feathered cut projects an attitude of ease and quiet confidence that seems to have all but eluded our generation.
This is a work in progress, and as my hair grows longer it will serve to become a more stirring and poignant statement.
And now it seems he’s shaved his head, buzz cut style. Some people say he looks like Jim Carrey. Oh… If you care to write a haiku about his hair, People magazine has the challenge.
Remember when he grew his hair out awhile ago? Eesh.

Love or hate his music, John Mayer can be a pretty amusing dude. He posts ridiculous videos on the internet, performs stand-up routines at comedy clubs, and generally has a good time with his media image. But I think one of the more memorable videos for me was from 2004’s John Mayer Has a TV Show which ran on VH1. It features an anonymous John Mayer in a bear suit interviewing his unsuspecting fans in a parking lot.

Spin Doctors had their 15 minutes of fame back in the early 90’s with their two big hits, Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong and Two Princes. I still hear Two Princes quite often on the radio, and I always think of Matt’s and my alternate lyrics for the chorus.
For those who don’t know, Chris Barron sings, “I know what a prince and lover ought to be”, but he sings the line so damn fast that it sounds like he says, “I know what a prison lover ought to be”. We prefer this line because, well, it sounds funnier that way.
Go ahead. Listen to it. Tell us we’re wrong.

Kristen and I are heading back to her home-town of Palmyra, Pennsylvania this weekend, and Heather sent me an email earlier.
Just wanted to wish you well on your trip to PA this weekend.
H
What’s kind of weird was this coincidence.
It’s funny that you sent this because Open Arms is currently playing in my earphones.
Matt
So of course, Heather sends me a reply. Attached was a little file called Journey-CompleteBand.jpg.
Attached is a great photo of Journey that I found.
H
Can you guess which one is me?
We’re big fans of Photoshoppery here at Songspeak. I think it might be Heather’s fault.
Oh, by the way, the title is a reference to Journey to the Center of the Earth. Funny thing about that is– If you weren’t near Iceland and needed to attempt any kind of travel to the center of the earth, Palmyra might be a good place to do this. It’s known for its sinkholes. They even have a restaurant called The Sinkhole Saloon.
Another fun fact about Palmyra is that parts of the John Travolta movie, Lucky Numbers was shot there.
John Travolta may not have been to the center of the earth, but he was in Battlefield Earth.
Love is a Battlefield. At least that’s what Pat Benatar said.
Okay, I think I’m done.

We had a GNO last night. First we embarassed ourselves bowling. Then we ate copious amounts of delicious boneless wings at the Toasted Owl. But we still weren’t quite satisfied.
Then someone had the bright idea to get ice cream. So what do a bunch of 30-something guys do when they crave ice cream? They go to Friendly’s, of
course! There was much debate as to what we would get. We joked about sharing a Giant Crowd Pleaser, a sundae containing a massive 12 scoops of ice cream. A couple guys thought maybe the understated charm of a Friend-Z might be more appropriate. But when the “create your own sundae” portion of the menu was discovered, all bets were off.
We all ended up creating our own 5 scoop sundae. For those keeping track, that’s 25 scoops of ice cream between the 5 of us. A whopping 13 more scoops than the Giant Crowd Pleaser. As we all wallowed in self pity, stuffed and full of regret for what we had done, Matt lamented his decision of not getting a Friend-Z. He burst out, “This is like 3 times a Friend-Z!” So I serenaded him, “Once….twice….three times a Friend-Z”.
And that was the last songspeak of the evening.

Matt and I have a friend that, we think, bears an uncanny resemblance to Chris Daughtry. I’ll withhold his name to protect the innocent, but you can be the judge:

The funny thing about this is, we tease him about it every now and then, and last year a bunch of us were going to get together to play poker. We emailed him during the workday before playing about how appreciative we were that he was taking time off his busy tour schedule to play poker with us. Then, that night, Matt got pretty low in chips in the game and all but counted himself out of the game. Our friend, completely oblivious I might add, just said, “It’s not over”. Matt asked him to repeat himself, because Matt realized before the rest of us that he had unknowingly songspoken the first major Daughtry hit, It’s Not Over, which was getting heavy airplay at the time. I still hear it every so often on the radio at work, and am always reminded of this story.

Hey, remember when Soul Asylum was popular?
Neither do I.
But I do remember about 15 years ago Grave Dancers Union came out, containing their first big hit, Black Gold, along with its ridiculous lyrics. Bill and I used to get hung up on the line “nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd”. We wondered whether the same applied to clowns and always changed the words to “nothing attracts a clown like a clown”.

And then there’s that ridiculous line about “I don’t care about no wheelchair”. What’s THAT all about?

So I heard Jessie’s Girl by Rick Springfield on the radio yesterday, and I was reminded of the long held debate of “Just what DOES he say?” The one line in the chorus can be interpreted as “Where can I find a woman like that” or “Why can’t I find a woman like that”. Both make sense in the context of the song, and both sound extremely similar when sang to that particular tune. Googling the lyrics leads to the answer being “where can I”, but I’m still not convinced. Listen for yourself and weigh in with your comments.

We lost our first Golden Girl yesterday when Estelle Getty passed away at age 84. I used to watch Golden Girls with my grandparents when I was a kid, and it amazes me how much of the humor must have gone over my head at the
time. I’m not the only person my age who used to watch it, and it’s odd to think of a show about a bunch of old ladies appealing to 10 year olds.
Poor old Estelle suffered from Lewy’s Body Dementia, and it was this sickness that led to her untimely demise.
What does this have to do with songspeak, you ask? Well, I know myself and others have songspoken the Golden Girls theme song on many occasions. That, as well as Sophia’s spunk and sass, prompted me to post.
