On Sunday, my wife Kristen and I purchased a Kenmore air purifier from Sears and brought it home. The air quality was especially bad this past weekend, and we wanted something to aid in our breathing. But as soon as we plugged it in, it smelled like cat fart. Kristen said it best, “It kind of smelled like a cross between faint skunk smell and garbage. And garlic.”
Needless to say, we returned it. On our way, in the car, we started singing That Smell by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I was singing… “ooo-ooh, that nose!” however. Anyway, I can’t praise Sears enough. We were able to get a refund without any issues and they were very helpful. In short, I can’t stand their product but their customer service is amazing.
This reminds me of an old songspeak that happened with Jamie from a few years ago. I used to go to his place to watch Lost. One time I asked if I could bring takeout chinese food over while I watched… and warned that it might “smell that smell”. He replied back with, “The smell of takeout surrounds you!”

Like so many television shows these days that have bastard versions of themselves (think Flip This House vs. Flip That House), there existed two particularly oss shows in the 80s called Knight Rider and Street Hawk. I watched them both. My wife Kristen and her brother used to watch Street Hawk growing up. When this came up in conversation recently, I referred to Street Hawk as “Knight Rider on a Motorcycle”. But as this video shows, I may have spoken foolishly.
You know you want to watch the opening sequences. (more…)

I’m ashamed to admit it, but yes, I do enjoy the new single by Kid Rock, All Summer Long. The first few times it came on mix 93.1, I thought it was Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon. Perhaps this is because it contains a sample from that song that runs throughout. Not only that, but the chorus is all about singing Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama. AND, I swear that’s Bob Seger singing background vocals. Although maybe it’s just someone meant to sound like him. I couldn’t find a definitive answer on that when I googled the hell out of it. And I think my favorite line is about “trying different things and smoking funny things“. Oh, the good old days.
So, a song ABOUT another song (Sweet Home Alabama), with Bob Seger (possibly) singing background over a Werewolves of London sample? It doesn’t get much more songspeak than that, my friends.

Having been to many a Barenaked Ladies show throughout the years, it’s unfortunate for us at Songspeak to learn that Steven Page was arrested on cocaine charges in Fayetteville, NY on July 11, 2008. He was charged with “fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance” and is due to appear in Syracuse court on Friday, July 18.
From the AP article:
Police say Steven Page was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance on Friday in the Syracuse area.
Authorities say the arrest occurred at about 2 a.m. after police noticed a suspicious car with its driver’s side door left open. They say they found Page and two women in a nearby apartment, along with cocaine and marijuana.
Barenaked Ladies recently released a cd of kids music called Snacktime, so this drug charge comes at a particularly bad time for the band.

Over 2 1/2 years ago, at my 30th birthday dinner at the Olive Garden, Matt, Heather, and I lamented about how ridiculous and overplayed the song Photograph by Nickelback was. We made fun of the lyrics, and how we’d hear it at least 3 times a day on the radio. So why post about it now? Because, over 2 1/2 years later, I still hear it at least once a day on mix 93.1. I guess Chad Kroeger never figured out how their eyes got so red, or what the hell was on Joey’s head.
I won’t torture you by posting the video as I usually do. So instead, look at this photograph. Every time I do it makes me laugh. (And what the hell is on that bunny’s head?):

The Feist song, 1 2 3 4 has popped up in an Apple iPod Nano commercial of course, but she found a whole new audience by kid-i-fying her song on Sesame Street recently. And though maybe not as much as this guy, she just loves counting to 4, what can she say.
Here’s the Apple iPod Nano commercial and here’s the music video for the actual song.

Creed shreds, Metallica shreds, Eric Clapton shreds, and Carlos Santana shreds. Anyone who’s ever been in a garage or basement band in middle school or high school will surely have an appreciation for these “shreds” videos that have been all over the YouTubes lately. I really can’t describe them in any way that will do them justice. Just watch them.
Here’s Creed.
Metallica shreds also. Here is their hit, One

As TMZ reports, David Lee Roth can eat as many nuts as he wants.
Diamond Dave tells TMZ: “I was in Canada only from July first through the fourth for a performance at the Quebec City Summer Festival. I had no encounters or incidents with the police. The only thing I’m allergic to is criticism. — Love, Dave”
We posted about this story earlier in the week here at Songspeak.
Sorry. We didn’t mean to contribute to such a nutty smear campaign, DLR.

This is quite an old songspeak, but I was reminded of Whoomp! (There It Is) by Tag Team last night while Jamie and I and a bunch of other dudes got together for a GNO (Guys’ Night Out). Usually our GNOs consist of getting together and going out to dinner, but we decided to kick it old school and play some Wiffle ball… then go to dinner.
Speaking of wiffleball, I started singing Bono-style… “wiffle without you” to Kristen in the car on our way home from work in anticipation of the GNO wiffle ball game. She gave me a thumbs down on that one.
And speaking of Old School, on a recent trip to Martha’s Vineyard, I was driving in Edgartown and stopped to let a pedestrian across the street. The pedestrian was, in fact, Luke Wilson of Old School, Legally Blonde, and countless Wes Anderson movies fame. Kristen and Heather were in the car with me when I said, “Hey, look who it is.” matter-of-fact-ly. They shrieked with excitement. Luke Wilson is taller than I would have expected.
Anyway, getting back to the Whoomp! (There It Is) portion of this story… basically, my dad– who is quite the jokester– started singing… Whoops, there it is! one time when he visited me. It’s been so long that I can’t remember the circumstances that led to it, but Jamie and I still joke about the misheard lyric to this day.

See? Even John McCain songspeaks!
I don’t know what reminded me of this truly hideous songspeak from over a year ago, but, well, here it is. The clip pretty much speaks for itself, but basically McCain is asked about his opinion regarding Iran, and he replies by making light of WAGING WAR ON ANOTHER NATION by performing his own version of Barbara Ann by the Beach Boys (actually, in doing my research for this post, I’ve discovered that the Beach Boys version is a cover and it was originally written and performed by The Regents) . I don’t know what’s more disturbing, the fact that he does it at all, or the fact that the people in the crowd seem to think it’s funny. Maybe it was nervous laughter. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Although, any politician capable of this, is surely capable of this:
