Comcast TV ads with terrible, yet clever puns

posted by matt | 08.20.08 | permalink |

We love puns here at Songspeak, and we have to thank Comcast for the latest round of commercials with clever puns in them. There are quite a few: Everyone Loves Money, Save Big Bucks, More Bang For Your Buck, Don’t Pay Through The Nose, and many others. A commenter on AdFreak points out that Round Table Pizza, a chain on the West Coast, has similar types of ads (”Killer Pizza”, etc.)… See the Round Table Pizza ads here.

But here are a few of our favorite Comcastic pun ads in all their glory.

Everyone Loves Money

Save Big Bucks

A couple more after the jump….

More Bang For Your Buck

Don’t Pay Through The Nose

If only I could find video of my personal favorite, A Lot of Kids Programming. Anyone out there find it?

I think my favorite one is “Save a Pretty Penny”. I couldn’t find that one anywhere, either.

But more importantly, why is that Indian guy getting so aroused by the guy trying to put money in the bus driver’s nose? That ain’t right…

Tough to Beat would have to be our favorite ’round here:

The favorite in the Olander household is the ‘Tough to Beat’ commercial. That said, there is a special place in my heart for both the superhero commercials: ‘Talk about Savings’(sadly no link could be found) and ‘Spiderman’.

Oooh, I don’t know if I’ve seen that one yet.

Luckily, Bill was kind enough to provide a link! He’s right though - the “Talk About Savings” superhero one is also a big hit in out house.

what is the happy little instrumental jingle they play at the end of all these clever play on words commercials? and where can i find a downloadable version of it?

@aline - That’s an excellent question. I always got the impression it was a jingle specific to those comcast commercials, so I’m not sure there actually is a downloadable version available. If we find one, though, we’ll be sure to post it!

I’m actually offended by the “pretty Penny” commercial. It plays into our society’s ideals of beauty, and that someone is trapped in a burning building because she’s not as attractive. That is a terrible message to send our young girls growing up today.

@Jennifer - I can see your point. I like it because of the punniness of it, not necessarily the message. Although if they’re going to base a commercial on a play-on-words for the phrase “save a pretty penny”, there’s really no way to avoid the implied message of “pretty people deserve better”.

I just try to take things like that tongue-in-cheek. But you do have a valid point.

our favorites are some of the really old ones - the old guy in the motorcycle shop trying to sell a biker a little bicycle “are you sure it’s fast?” “look at the flames!”
oh, and if our young women are getting their idea of beauty from a 15sec comcast commercial, god help us all
