So, another trip to Lancaster for me and and my family for work, and more mix CD’s made for the 6 hour roadtrip. When making CD’s for the trip, my wife and I strive for a good variety of music that we enjoy, as well as some kid’s songs to keep Quinn happy in the backseat. It seems every year there’s a song or two that catches on with her that we end up listening to incessantly. Last year, it was the theme songs to iCarly and Drake & Josh. This year, it was the Hoedown Throwdown off the Hannah Montana Movie soundtrack. The Hannah Montana Movie is the first movie Quinn saw in a real theater. And we netflixed the DVD so she’d have something to watch on the portable DVD player on the trip and in the hotel room. I hadn’t seen the movie, and hearing the song on one of my wife’s two mixes was my first experience with it. Then, we arrived in Lancaster, PA, and stopped at the Olive Garden for dinner. And while sitting at the table, Quinn kept singing, “Boom boom clap, boom dee clap dee clap”. It took me awhile to realize she was singing this song, but when watching the DVD with her in the room, it all became clear. Miley travels home to Tennessee with her dad and brother to visit her grandmother, and during a party, spices it up by adding some hip hop to their hoedown. And from then on, Quinn insisted on listening to the “Miley Montana” song (don’t worry, she’s very clear on the Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana double-life situation). And we must have listened to that song about a million times whenever we were in the car. Quinn wants to learn how to do the dance, but thinks she’s still a bit young, and then realized that Miley sings that, “if you’re 5 or 82, this is something you can do”, and since she’s only 4, she’s not quite old enough to do it. Now, Hannah Montana has grown on me in the past year or so, and I must say, this song is damn catchy. I didn’t really mind listening to it over and over. See for yourself:

Being the parent of a three year old has opened my eyes to so many television shows and forms of entertainment that I may have otherwise missed.
It’s such a shame that the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana gets all the attention as THE popular kids’ show these days, because, well, have you ever watched it? It’s awful…the “acting”, the ridiculous storylines, and the painfully scripted and unfunny “comedy”. Ugh.
Nickelodeon is where it’s at for awesome kid comedy. Two of Quinn’s (and our) favorite shows are iCarly and Drake & Josh. Drake & Josh isn’t actually on anymore, but we always watch reruns (usually sandwiched between episodes of Spongebob Squarepants), and iCarly’s new season just started. While the acting on these shows isn’t top notch, it’s much more natural than the overexaggerated tripe on Hannah Montana, and the actors and characters are much more likeable. And these shows are FUNNY! I’ll even go on record to say that they’re better than Saved by the Bell, a show of a very similar genre from my generation.
iCarly stars Miranda Cosgrove (she got her start as the band’s manager in School of Rock with Jack Black) as a teenager who lives with her older brother and runs a mega-popular webshow with her friends. iCarly.com actually exists as a real website, and is basically a companion to the show, which is pretty clever.
Drake & Josh stars Josh Peck (now a fairly accomplished actor after his role in the critically praised The Wackness) and Drake Bell as best friends who become step-brothers when their parents get married. They have wacky misadventures, usually involving their younger sister (again, played by Miranda Cosgrove).
Because these are so popular at home, I included the theme songs on a mix CD I made for our recent trip to Lancaster, PA. For the first two hours of the trip home, Quinn asked to first hear the Drake & Josh theme, followed by the iCarly theme, repeatedly. And we love them so much, we gladly obliged.
Here is the video for the iCarly theme Leave it All to Me, as performed by Miranda Cosgrove:
And the video for the Drake & Josh theme Found a Way, as performed by Drake Bell:

Watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall this past weekend and How I Met Your Mother on Monday got me to thinking about Jason Segal’s start on Freaks and Geeks, and some of the more classic moments from that show. Awhile back, Matt posted about Nick serenading Lindsey with the Styx classic Lady.
Well, one of my favorite Nick moments from Freaks and Geeks is when he’s drumming along with Spirit of the Radio by Rush. One would think he’s doing an awesome job, until his dad comes down the stairs and you get the perspective of the outside observer.
This scene is so great because not only is it an awesome song, but who hasn’t been singing along to the car radio, or doing karaoke, and thinking they sound awesome, when, in reality, they’re awful?
(Lostaholics note: John Locke’s dad makes a cameo in this clip!)
Tangential anecdote: Jo and I once shared a flight to Australia with Jason Segal (thankfully, it didn’t crash on a mysterious island). We noticed him waiting in the Auckland, New Zealand airport on our layover along with the rest of the passengers from our plane. Which is funny because the night before we had watched Can’t Hardly Wait in the hotel room, and he has a small cameo in that. And now, thanks to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I’ve seen his penis.

Product placement in movies is nothing new, and neither is having notable recording artists to write songs for 007 movies. This latest pairing of Jack White and Alicia Keys for the upcoming James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, does seem a little strange to us, but whatever.
Here’s the video of the song, “Another Way To Die”
Oh, and we’re to apparently think that 007 enjoys a bottle of Coke Zero in the cupholder of his shiny new Aston Martin, but he should be sure to focus on the road while he’s driving. It was nice of Jack White to write the song for this Coke commercial. Oh wait, he didn’t.
Here’s the Coke Zero tv commercial that used the song:

Last night, Jo and I went to see My Best Friend’s Girl, starring Dane Cook, Kate Hudson, and Jason Biggs. I have no excuse other than we had a babysitter, and it was the only movie we could remotely agree on.
It was a bit funnier than we expected, but it was your standard romantic comedy fare. This isn’t a movie review site, so I’m not going to waste your time telling you how average it is. Or how utterly “Dane Cook” Dane Cook is.
My reason for bringing it up is because the movie gets its title from the Cars song of the same name (from 1978’s self-titled album). This makes sense not only because of the plot of the movie, but also because the movie takes place in Boston (why they didn’t name it after a Boston song, I’ll never know). Though for a movie that shares its name with the Cars song, it’s surprising that the song isn’t used in the film. Oh, wait a minute. Yes it is. Repeatedly. I mean, really. To the point of ridiculousness.
Movies using song titles as their own title is definitely a form of songspeak, and there are many others. Some Kind of Wonderful, for one. I’m sure there’s a whole laundry list of them. Can you think of more? Post ‘em in the comments.

X-Files and Californication star David Duchovny has admitted himself to a rehabilitation center for sex addiction. Many people seem surprised, but given his role on Californication, and his early work in the Showtime soft-porn series Red Shoe Diaries, I’m not all that shocked.
He has asked for respect and privacy for his family (including wife Tea Leoni), which is understandable. But one wonders how something like this happens. He must’ve kissed a girl. And liked it. A lot.
This probably also explains his ***spoiler alert*** steamy scenes with Gillian Anderson in the latest X-Files dud. I mean, movie.
Anyhow, I wish him well in his recovery. Let’s keep those boners in check, David. (And I know “boners” is crass, but blame Matt’s reference to Growing Pains in the last post for that one).

This misheard lyric comes from an early episode of Friends. Phoebe is talking about the song by Elton John about Tony Danza, and starts singing, “Hold me closer, Tony Danza“.
I don’t think anyone had the heart to tell her it was “Hold me closer, tiny dancer“. But I like her version better.
The song also had a brief resurgence in the 2000 movie Almost Famous.
And speaking of Tony Danza, it’s a shame his short-lived talk show got canceled. I was a big fan of the Danzitions segments on The Soup. There’s an example in this clip:

The news hit Songspeak early today that Issac Hayes is dead at age 65. He was found collapsed near a treadmill in his Memphis, Tennessee home by his wife, young son, and cousin after they returned home from the grocery store.
Hayes was most famous for 1971’s “Theme From Shaft” for the movie, Shaft, but was also part of John Singleton’s 2000 version of Shaft, starring Samuel L. Jackson and also Bernie Mac, who also died suddenly recently.
Shaft was originally released in 1971. Here’s the 2000 version of Theme From Shaft, with clips of the movie:
We are saddened to learn of the passing of Issac Hayes, who also brilliantly provided the voice for Chef on South Park for many seasons. He provided much wisdom to the children of South Park before leaving the show after Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s episode poking fun at Scientology.
One of our favorite Chef song is probably Chocolate Salty Balls. Classic.

Who doesn’t like Morgan Freeman? No one, that’s who. I can’t think of another actor so universally beloved. Seriously. So imagine our concern here at Songspeak when we heard that he was in a horrific car accident yesterday.
It looks like he’s gonna be ok, which is a miracle considering his car was seen to go airborne off the highway and flip a few times before landing in a ditch. Since he’s God (as seen in Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty), I guess it’s a shock that he suffered any injury at all. Maybe this will be the kick in the ass he needs to finish his Bucket List. I just hope he’s not found at fault in the accident, or else he may end up in Shawshank prison. I can only imagine the Deep Impact his car had on the side of the highway. Maybe it was a Dark Knight and he just couldn’t see the road. Actually, rumor has it he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. I’m sure Miss Daisy wouldn’t approve.
Whatever happened, I’m glad he’s ok.
What I didn’t remember, however, is that he was on The Electric Company. Anybody remember watching that when they were a kid? I did, but I don’t remember the Easy Reader. I think the following video showcases Morgan Freeman’s range better than any movie could:
Hang in there, Easy Reader. We’re pullin’ for ya.

Lately I’ve been seeing tv commercials for an AutoTrader.com featuring Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult. You know, the ones where “the giant guy is looking at the cars?” as Jamie said to me over an IM to me this morning. I was having a hard time remembering which of the plethora of auto sites (Carfax, Vehix, Cars.com, etc.) it actually was.
Whenever I think about Godzilla (which… don’t worry, doesn’t happen often) I think about the time when Jamie won a 4-pack of tickets to a showing of Godzilla 2000 at Cinemark.
Jamie, (his fiance at the time, but now) wife Jo, myself, and my dad went to see this one very special evening.
Godzilla 2000, or Gojira ni-sen mireniamu as it’s known in Japan, is Takao Okawara’s version of the 1954 classic Godzilla. And even though there were films after the 1954 version, this storyline ignores that. It’s all about a UFO invading Tokyo and Godzilla fighting with it.

It’s interesting that this movie was made and released in 1999 in Japan. Remember all the Y2K crap that people were freaking out about?
Anyway, this is not to be confused with the really terrible Hollywood-i-fied version of Godzilla in 1998ish that Taco Bell sponsored.
Taco Bell and the damn chihuahua dog in all their tv commercials. Oh, you don’t remember “I think I need a bigger box”? Jamie and I have been known to quote this from time to time even still.
Here’s video of that commercial:
