Last night was the Comedy Night Done Right on NBC with season premieres of My Name is Earl, The Office, and ER. And amazingly enough, there were great songspeak moments in each of these episodes!
There was a scene in My Name is Earl
where Earl’s dad (played by Beau Bridges) goes to confront an old neighbor who he had just found out had a fling with his wife years ago. As they’re waiting at the door, Earl starts singing Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. When the dude’s wife (who had taken years of self defense classes) starts pounding the holy hell out of his dad, Earl keeps singing.
The Office was awesome, as always. At the end of last season, Andy Bernard proposed to Angela (who is boffing Dwight Schrute on the side), and she reluctantly accepted. The Angela/Andy wedding plotline was only a small part of last night’s episode, but in one scene where Andy goes to Angela’s desk to talk to her, he references Umbrella by Rihanna by singing, “My Angela..ella…ella”.
Finally, on ER, Tony Hale (Buster Bluth from Arrested Development) guest starred as a patient who had broken his leg
saving an old woman. He was a very talkative patient, and would tell anyone who listened how he was injured because he was saving someone. In one of his ramblings, he starts reciting song lyrics. I believe it was Hero by Mariah Carey because he finished with “and there’s a hero inside of you…ha ha, the song was right!”
NBC went 3 for 3 last night with the songspeaks. Kudos, National Broadcasting Company. Kudos.

John McCain was supposed to appear as a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman last night. However, because of the economic crisis this country is suffering (due to the absolute joke that is the Bush administration), McCain felt it necessary to cancel his appearance at the last minute.
This didn’t sit too well with David Letterman, and he railed on John McCain like there was no tomorrow. He chided him for suspending his campaign, he criticized him for not having Sarah Palin take his place while he took care of business in Washington, DC. He even showed live footage of McCain being interviewed by Katie Couric, while he was supposed to be on his way back to Washington. Letterman and Keith Olbermann hammed it up while watching the footage.
Take a look at the tongue lashing Letterman unleashed last night:

I know I post plenty of stuff about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but I for one, am pretty excited about the season premiere tonight. Two episodes: Mac and Dennis: Manhunters and The Gang Solves The Gas Crisis, will be shown.
For shits and giggles in the meantime, the I’m Goin’ Back to Philly promo video was hilarious. The Day Man, Fighter of the Night Man video is classic.
Kristen, Heather, and I are huge fans of the show, and actually, our friend Bill used to be involved in stage work with Charlie Day at Merrimack College.
Here’s some info from the Paddy’s Pub blog:

We’ll be posting a behind-the-scenes video on “The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis,” introduced by the honorable Rob McElhenney, immediately following the episode on Thursday night. So be sure to hop online and check that out. Until then, get excited because you are just 24 hours away from a hilarious new season of Sunny!

Anyone who knows me knows I’m obsessed with Lost. Yes, yes, it’s true. I listen to many of the podcasts, watch the show religiously, own all the DVD’s, and pretty much pick it apart at any given opportunity.
I also like the Pixies. Not obsessively so, but I have been opened up to the goodness that is their music by my wife, Jo. We even went to see them a few years ago when they played the Mullins Center at UMass.
How do these two things relate? Well, if one pokes around youtube, one can find many fan-made music videos set to clips of their favorite shows. Some are decent, and some are just downright awful. A couple years ago, the Jay and Jack Lost video podcast showed a Lost music video set to Where is My Mind by the Pixies, and I really liked it. It’s a good song, and the clips and beats flow really well together.
So, for those of you Lost fans who are also suffering withdrawals during this extended hiatus, enjoy:

Brilliantly played by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, this season of Saturday Night Live opened over this past weekend with a bang. Fey played John McCain’s vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin. Poehler played Hillary Clinton.
Here’s a transcript:
FEY AS PALIN: “Good evening, my fellow Americans. I was so excited when I was told Senator Clinton and I would be addressing you tonight.”
POEHLER AS CLINTON: “And I was told I would be addressing you alone.”
FEY AS PALIN: “Now I know it must be a little bit strange for all of you to see the two of us together. What with me being John McCain’s running mate.”
POEHLER AS CLINTON: “And me being a fervent supporter of Senator Barack Obama — as evidenced by this button.”
FEY AS PALIN: “But tonight we are crossing party lines to address the now very ugly role that sexism is playing in the campaign.”
POEHLER AS CLINTON: “An issue which I am frankly surprised to hear people suddenly care about.”

X-Files and Californication star David Duchovny has admitted himself to a rehabilitation center for sex addiction. Many people seem surprised, but given his role on Californication, and his early work in the Showtime soft-porn series Red Shoe Diaries, I’m not all that shocked.
He has asked for respect and privacy for his family (including wife Tea Leoni), which is understandable. But one wonders how something like this happens. He must’ve kissed a girl. And liked it. A lot.
This probably also explains his ***spoiler alert*** steamy scenes with Gillian Anderson in the latest X-Files dud. I mean, movie.
Anyhow, I wish him well in his recovery. Let’s keep those boners in check, David. (And I know “boners” is crass, but blame Matt’s reference to Growing Pains in the last post for that one).

American Idol has decided to kick it up a notch and add a fourth judge to their panel. Joining Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul will be Kara DioGuardi, a Grammy nominated songwriter.
This news is being taken a couple different ways, some like the change and some don’t. One must wonder how Paula Abdul will feel about an intelligent, well-spoken female hopping aboard the American Idol train. I mean, next to Kara DioGuardi, Paula will look even more like the drunk, insane, retarded drug addict that she is. But for many, that’s the only reason to watch this dying glorified talent show.
To Kara’s credit, she has written hit songs for many of American Idol’s alumni, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice, and Clay Aiken. But really, it seems American Idol is getting desperate, feeling the need to change their format now.
Let’s be honest: American Idol is garbage. It has been since the third or fourth season. Some might argue it has been since it premiered. Me? I just find it sad that in any given week, more people vote for a bunch of mediocre, semi-talented wanna-be karaoke performers than vote for the next president of our country. But that’s just me.
So, what’s my opinion on American Idol adding a fourth judge?
Who gives a rat’s ass?

This misheard lyric comes from an early episode of Friends. Phoebe is talking about the song by Elton John about Tony Danza, and starts singing, “Hold me closer, Tony Danza“.
I don’t think anyone had the heart to tell her it was “Hold me closer, tiny dancer“. But I like her version better.
The song also had a brief resurgence in the 2000 movie Almost Famous.
And speaking of Tony Danza, it’s a shame his short-lived talk show got canceled. I was a big fan of the Danzitions segments on The Soup. There’s an example in this clip:

We’ve posted here before about the use of songspeak in commercials. However, I don’t know that we’ve ever praised the virtues of the local commercial. The Office even dedicated an episode to the art of the local commercial.
This post is a wonderful example of the local commercial combined with songspeak in advertising. Fenway Golf is a mini-golf/pitch & putt/driving range/par 3 golf course/batting cage all-around activity center located in East Longmeadow, MA. It’s a fun place to spend a Saturday with the family, but more importantly, it has one of the most phenomenal local commercials we’ve ever seen.
It features their own special version of U Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer (which itself samples Superfreak by Rick James). There must be something about that catchy bassline, given that numerous commercials have utilized both songs, or alternate versions thereof (Mohegan Sun, for instance, or the many examples here). Well, in Fenway Golf’s version, their adorable golf ball mascot bounces to and fro throughout the grounds, singing his own catchy version of the MC Hammer classic.
Words really don’t do it justice, so you’ll just have to see for yourself:

Last week, Lifestyles condom company offered Miley Cyrus, 15 year old star of the Disney Channel hit Hannah Montana, $1 million to be their new spokesperson.
Does anyone else find this strange? I mean, the girl is FIFTEEN! In the past she has stated that she will wait until she’s married to have sex, but maybe Lifestyles figures she can have the best of both worlds by being able to bump uglies pre-marriage and take precautions to keep from getting knocked up.
Miley’s already dealt with one controversy recently with the Vanity Fair photo scandal, so can you imagine the backlash if she became Lifestyle’s new spokesgirl?
Life is what you make it, Miley, so don’t make it a living hell by doing anything silly, like being the public face of a condom company.
