This misheard lyric comes from an early episode of Friends. Phoebe is talking about the song by Elton John about Tony Danza, and starts singing, “Hold me closer, Tony Danza“.
I don’t think anyone had the heart to tell her it was “Hold me closer, tiny dancer“. But I like her version better.
The song also had a brief resurgence in the 2000 movie Almost Famous.
And speaking of Tony Danza, it’s a shame his short-lived talk show got canceled. I was a big fan of the Danzitions segments on The Soup. There’s an example in this clip:

We’ve posted here before about the use of songspeak in commercials. However, I don’t know that we’ve ever praised the virtues of the local commercial. The Office even dedicated an episode to the art of the local commercial.
This post is a wonderful example of the local commercial combined with songspeak in advertising. Fenway Golf is a mini-golf/pitch & putt/driving range/par 3 golf course/batting cage all-around activity center located in East Longmeadow, MA. It’s a fun place to spend a Saturday with the family, but more importantly, it has one of the most phenomenal local commercials we’ve ever seen.
It features their own special version of U Can’t Touch This by MC Hammer (which itself samples Superfreak by Rick James). There must be something about that catchy bassline, given that numerous commercials have utilized both songs, or alternate versions thereof (Mohegan Sun, for instance, or the many examples here). Well, in Fenway Golf’s version, their adorable golf ball mascot bounces to and fro throughout the grounds, singing his own catchy version of the MC Hammer classic.
Words really don’t do it justice, so you’ll just have to see for yourself:

Last week, Lifestyles condom company offered Miley Cyrus, 15 year old star of the Disney Channel hit Hannah Montana, $1 million to be their new spokesperson.
Does anyone else find this strange? I mean, the girl is FIFTEEN! In the past she has stated that she will wait until she’s married to have sex, but maybe Lifestyles figures she can have the best of both worlds by being able to bump uglies pre-marriage and take precautions to keep from getting knocked up.
Miley’s already dealt with one controversy recently with the Vanity Fair photo scandal, so can you imagine the backlash if she became Lifestyle’s new spokesgirl?
Life is what you make it, Miley, so don’t make it a living hell by doing anything silly, like being the public face of a condom company.

The Feist song, 1 2 3 4 has popped up in an Apple iPod Nano commercial of course, but she found a whole new audience by kid-i-fying her song on Sesame Street recently. And though maybe not as much as this guy, she just loves counting to 4, what can she say.
Here’s the Apple iPod Nano commercial and here’s the music video for the actual song.

This is just a little Scrubs-originated all-purpose comeback that I like to use every now and then. We all pretty much use variations of this including, but not limited to:
So’s your mom
YOU’RE (insert whatever was previously said here)
And so on and so on. You all know what I’m talkin’ about. So’s your face.

It seems everywhere you turn, Boy George is in the spotlight. Oh, wait…you mean it’s not 1983? Well, that hasn’t stopped Boy George from being in the news anyway.
It appears as though he was refused a visa to enter the U.S. because of an impending criminal trial in London. Looks like the Karma Chameleon has caught up with him for past transgressions, as the reason he was to travel to America was for a tour that would kick-off with a performance on The Today Show on July 7th.
Here is Meredith Vieria’s mind-numbingly scintillating interview with the pop icon himself:

The Taco Town!!! parody on SNL was one of the more memorable fake tv commercials (”Pizza?! Now that’s a taco!”). It was a spoof on Taco Bell’s products like the Cheesy Gordita Crunch (delicious) and the Double Layer Taco (also delicious).
Kristen and I went with a group of friends to Fitzwilly’s last night. We started talking to Ethan and Angela (who live in L.A.) about mexican food chains we don’t have on the East Coast, like Del Taco and El Pollo Loco. This skit came up in conversation. Ethan then did a rather good impression of Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Andy Samberg excitedly yelling “Taco Town!!!” from the skit.
And of course, you guessed it– due to the awesomeness and popularity of the sketch, some hooligans actually attempted to make the Taco Town taco and posted a video of it on the internets.

The Others are a band from Easthampton, Massachusetts (hometown represent, yo!) that writes and performs songs about the ABC tv show, Lost. If you’re a fan of the show, you’re in for a real treat with their songs. They combine a love for the Lost plotline, a keen sense of detail, and witty lyrics.
Some of my favorite lines from their songs:
“Destiny is a fickle bitch, Locke. One day you’re the chosen one… the next day you’re not.
“I was told by the Other woman about your other guy.”
“Will you marry me, Kate? I hope it’s not too late. We can start a family… you and Aaron and me”
Here is a song by The Others called “Primary Objective”:
Here’s another one of their songs, “Flash Forward”
There’s something amusing about how seriously the songs are sung, and yet the lyrics are just really about Lost. I wonder though, if non-watchers will find the same joy in these songs as I do. Regardless, Shannon Purcell, Eric Lee, Blake Girndt, Tommy Foster, and Gabe Sullivan who also make up their non-Lost band, The Thungs, seem to be cranking these songs out like nobody’s business. Each song is for sale on their myspace site. More videos of their songs after the jump. (more…)

Last night was the first night of Million Dollar Mania on Monday Night RAW . Vince McMahon is basically giving away $1,000,000 every week on RAW until he feels like stopping. Fans register on wwe.com, and are given a password at the beginning of the show. Vince then calls people thoughout the 2 hour broadcast, asks for the password , and gives away some money.
Well, his first phone call (in addition to making three attempts to get through) had unexpected and hilarious results. First of all, it seems Vince McMahon has never dialed a phone before. Second of all, it seems he has no idea what a reverse ringtone is. On top of that, the reverse ringtone in question rickrolled Vince McMahon and the entire RAW audience. I don’t know what’s the funniest part of the video; Vince’s buffoonery, his goofy old man glasses, the reverse ringtone, or the announcers:

Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. made a “viral video” for the 2008 MTV Movie Awards to promote their upcoming movie, Tropic Thunder. I didn’t see the awards this year (which were somewhat close to a massive fire at universal studios), but I’m generally of the opinion that the best part of these types shows are these short sequences anyhow, so I don’t feel like I missed much since they’re on the internets.
As Scott Brodeur says on his BlogBeat post about this video, There is no more surefire punchline than the crotchkick. Tropic Thunder isn’t opening until August sometime, but I’m kind of psyched to see it.
