A high school friend of ours, Bill is a regular commenter here on Songspeak, . We’re grateful to Bill for the tip about AC/DC providing the soundtrack to Iron Man 2.
Witness the IM madness:
jamie: it’s all thanks to bill
matt: should have titled it shoot to bill
matt: for those about to bill, we bill
jamie: yeah, I couldn’t think of a good title
matt: I feel safe in bill york bill
matt: bill’s bells
jamie: bill made bill
matt: rock and bill ain’t noise bill
It got me thinking, what might the tracklisting for Iron Man 2 look like if Bill had his way:
1. Shoot to Bill
2. Rock ‘N’ Roll Billnation
3. Guns for Bill
4. Cold Hearted Bill
5. Bill in Black
6. ThunderBill
7. If You Want Bill (You’ve Got It)
8. Evil Bill
9. T.N.B.
10. Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Bill
11. Have a Drink on Bill
12. The Razor’s Bill
13. Let There Be Bill
14. Bill Machine
15. Highway to Bill

Thanks to Bill for sending me this link earlier today. It seems that the soundtrack for Iron Man 2 will consist of solely AC/DC songs, and the soundtrack, available April 19, 2010, will be called AC/DC: Iron Man 2. One would think that AC/DC recorded a new track or two for the soundtrack, like Big Gun from Last Action Hero or Who Made Who for Maximum Overdrive, but nope, no new songs…just old stuff. So really, it’s kind of a “greatest hits” package of sorts. Which is fine, I’m sure the music in the movie will be rockin’, but would it have killed them to record a new song for the movie? (As I mentioned to Bill earlier, given their age, it just might). And didn’t Black Sabbath have a song titled Iron Man? Maybe it was in the first movie, who knows…I still haven’t gotten around to watching it yet. It appears as though Jon Favreau is a big AC/DC fan, and that was one of the factors that contributed to this whole scenario. Very reminiscent of how Stephen King wanted AC/DC exclusively for the soundtrack of Maximum Overdrive (based on his short story Trucks) because he’s a fan. Oh, Maximum Overdrive. Emilio Estevez. And remember when that other dude got clobbered by that truck that came to life? That was awesome. Anyway, enough reminiscing.
It looks like the soundtrack does a good job encompassing AC/DC’s whole career with some classic old Bon Scott songs right up to a song off their most recent CD Black Ice. You can see the track listing at the link above, but here it is anyway:
1. Shoot to Thrill
2. Rock ‘N’ Roll Damnation
3. Guns for Hire
4. Cold Hearted Man
5. Back in Black
6. Thunderstruck
7. If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)
8. Evil Walks
9. T.N.T.
10. Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be
11. Have a Drink on Me
12. The Razor’s Edge
13. Let There Be Rock
14. War Machine
15. Highway to Hell
And here’s the first video for Shoot to Thrill from the movie:
Keep your eyes on Brian Johnson. There’s something about a 62 year old grinding his hips that isn’t disturbing at all.
NOT.

This songspeak took place a couple weeks ago on one of my poker nights. I’m not going to explain the game of no limit texas hold ‘em here, but for those familiar with the game, the story will make sense.
I wasn’t playing this hand, but was just observing along with everyone else at the table. It was a guy and girl in in the pot together (I’ll withhold the names to protect the innocent), and the flop was J 8 8, I believe. They both checked. The turn was an A, the girl made a substantial bet, and the guy called. The river was another J, the guy bet big, and after thinking for a minute, she finally felt like she had to call. After she called, but before they showed their cards, I was singing The Jack by AC/DC at the end of the table, “He’s got the jack…he’s got the jack”. The woman sitting next to me commented that she loves that song. The guy indeed showed a jack for a full house, beating the girl’s 2 pair, aces over 8’s (this isn’t the blog or place to analyze how horrible his move of calling her turn bet was when it was obvious she had an ace or 8 and he was only drawing to 2 outs, but I digress…)
The Jack is one of my favorite Bon Scott-era AC/DC songs. It’s basically a song about an STD, but uses playing cards and poker as a clever metaphor. Lyrically, one of AC/DC’s better efforts. At least, the studio version. The live version now performed by Brian Johnson has alternate lyrics and is more of a straightforward to-the-point description of said disease.
*Disclaimer – The point of this story is that guy had a jack playing card in his hand. I have no idea if he has the disease “the jack” or not.

AC/DC’s new single, Rock N’ Roll Train, has raised more questions than answers here at Songspeak. Brian Johnson does NOT… I repeat… does NOT sing the song title (Rock N’ Roll Train) over and over again in the chorus. It has us a little thrown off. They’ve been following the formula for years. All of a sudden, this drastic change?! I mean, if you can’t depend on consistency from AC/DC, then what CAN you depend on?
The revelation unfolded between Jamie and myself over IM:
Matt: hold on now…. this may be the first song where I’m aware that they are NOT repeating the song title over and over again
Jamie: well, the name of the song is rock and roll train, but the chorus repeats “runaway train”, so I don’t know what’s going on there
Matt: yeah!
Matt: name another ac/dc song where they don’t repeat the title of the song for the chorus. I’m finding it difficult to think of one
Matt: this is a real departure for ac/dc
Matt: honestly, can you think of any?
Jamie: I’m thinking…
Jamie: I need to go back through some of their older stuff and see
Matt: it really is amazing that it’s this difficult
Jamie: isn’t that what their songs are supposed to be, though? verse/song title repeated in chorus/verse/repeat?
Matt: why NOW after however many years with the same formula?!
Jamie: it was probably going to be called runaway train, and somebody decided rock and roll train was more rockin’…
Jamie: damn you…now I have to go through their discography
Here’s the music video for their newest single, Rock N’ Roll Train:
I think it would be very difficult to find lyrics to an AC/DC song that doesn’t contain at least one of the following 10 words (in no particular order).
Here’s a challenge to our readers. Think of an AC/DC song that either contains ALL of the above words in the lyrics -OR- think of an AC/DC song that contains NONE of the above words in the lyrics… post your entries in the comments below.
In the meantime…

The new iPod Nano looks pretty cool. All-aluminum and glass curvy shell. A bunch of colors. Some fun features like shaking it up when you want to shuffle to the next song (which by the way, we can’t wait to see throngs of people semi-violently shaking their right hands up and down in public).
Between being able to watch movies, play games, and of course, listen to music and podcasts, the iPod is just awesome, and it keeps getting awesomer.
We also think it’s also pretty cool that Apple has a little bit of songspeak action on their website. Giving shout-outs to AC/DC (For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) and Peaches & Herb (Shake Your Groove Thing) are surefire ways to sell iPod nanos to the masses, we think.

In an interesting move, the new AC/DC album, Black Ice will be released only at Wal-Mart stores and the band’s website. Way to stick it to the man, AC/DC.
I think what surprises me most is that over the years, Wal-Mart has banned albums by Sheryl Crow, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Goo Goo Dolls and books by John Stewart, George Carlin and others. These are products Wal-Mart considers to have the wrong values for their stores. And yet, AC/DC, a band who for decades has almost exclusively had songs about sex and booze makes the cut. Wal-Mart accounts for 10% of record sales domestically, so they have a huge influence. I wonder if AC/DC will sanitize this release.
AC/DC’s last album in 2000, Stiff Upper Lip, contained the brilliant Safe In New York City, a song which Jamie and I mock profusely for the number of times the words “I feel safe in New York City” are repeated.
Oh AC/DC. Like an old friend. If all their previous albums are any indication, I’m sure that this will fall under the category of good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll. I doubt anyone will be surprised by what it sounds like.
