I Always Feel Like, Geico’s Watchin’ Me

Geico’s done it again. They’ve put together yet another clever ad campaign that I get a kick out of. I can’t think of another company/product with so many simultaneous great ad campaigns, but it works for them. There’s the Geico gecko, the “so easy a caveman could do it“, the celebrities-assist-in-telling-an-accident story, and now the being-watched-by-the-money-you-could-be-saving campaign:

The best part about these commercials is that they utilize the 1984 Rockwell classic Somebody’s Watching Me. I used to love the video when I was a kid:

Chalk this up as another advertising win for Geico. I may not use them for my car insurance, but I sure do love their quirky out-there commercials. And any company that uses Rockwell in their commercials is gold, Jerry, gold.

In a world… without Don LaFontaine’s movie voice

A voiceover master, Don LaFontaine recorded countless movie trailers, commericals, programs, files and other presentations. He was arguably the most successful voice actor of all time. Monday, September 1st, 2008, LaFontaine died at the age of 68 following complications from a collapsed lung.

Here’s a good retrospective on his career.

From LaFontaine’s website:

Over the past 25 years, LaFontaine cemented his position as the “King of Voice-overs.” Aside from his continuing work in the trailer industry, he has also been the voice of NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox and UPN, in addition to TNT, TBS and the Cartoon Network. By conservative estimates, he has voiced hundreds of thousands of television and radio spots, including commercials for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, Budweiser, McDonalds, Coke, and many other corporate sponsors. At last count, he has worked on nearly 5000 films, including appearances as the in-show announcer for the Screen Actors Guild and Academy Awards. Based on contracts signed, he has the distinction of being perhaps the single busiest actor in the history of SAG.

Due to the sheer number of trailers he recorded, Don LaFontaine became known for his “In a world….” phrase. He poked fun of his cliche phrase at various events, and of course, in this great Geico commercial.

Congratulations to our friends Aric and Christen on the birth of their daughter, Hazel Rose!

Matt broke the news to me yesterday via IM, saying, “Aric and Christen ottababy eetsaboy” then followed up with, “Actually it’s a girl”. This was in reference to the Geico commercial from a few years ago. The following version is the revised commercial in which they had to put a disclaimer not to cheat the phone company:
