That’s right, The Golden Girls‘ own Rose Nylund… the incomparable Betty White, is slated to host the May 8th “Mother’s Day episode” of SNL! That this didn’t happen sooner is perhaps life’s biggest mystery.
Betty’s self-deprecating humor and quick wit is sure to be a great match for Saturday Night Live, and we’re excited to see what is likely going to be one of the more memorable SNL episodes.
According to People, “…the special Mother’s Day episode will also reunite six former female SNL cast members, most of whom happen to be moms: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch.” While the 88 year old Betty White is not actually a mom herself, she is perhaps “a mother of great comedy”. That’s good enough for us.
How did this happen? A Facebook fan page titled “Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!” creeped up soon after a Snickers commercial featuring Betty White getting tackled in a muddy football game aired during the 2010 Super Bowl. A groundswell of support and petitioning of Lorne Michaels made it all happen!

The Snickers commercial featuring the incomparable Betty White and the adorable Abe Vigoda was probably one of the best commercials shown during the 2010 Super Bowl. It really looked like they got tackled pretty hard! Featuring their new tagline, “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry“, I can only hope this is a sign of more commercials featuring Betty White.
Betty White has always been hilarious, from her days on Golden Girls to her various appearances on talk shows and small roles on tv shows. Betty White fans have recently created a Facebook fan page called Betty White to Host SNL (Please?)! which has over 70,000 fans and counting. We at Songspeak agree. She’d be a perfect SNL host.

I never thought I’d be typing this, but Josh Groban gave a stellar performance at the 2008 Emmys / The Academy Awards, doing an amusing medley of television theme songs. There was quite a variety, and I think I was most impressed with seeing Groban do the South Park theme (1:45 in or so). Also notable is the theme song from Cops about 2:45 in.
Here’s a list of all the TV theme songs Josh Groban sang or made reference to:
The Simpsons
Friends
Happy Days
Golden Girls
Mister Roger’s Neighborhood
The Andy Grifith Show
The Love Boat
Law & Order
The Addams Family
The Muppet Show
The X-Files
South Park
The Jeffersons
Baywatch
The Brady Bunch
COPS
Law & Order
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Saturday Night Live
The Late Show with David Letterman
Late Night with Conan O’Brien
The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
Two and a Half Men
Rawhide
Gilligan’s Island
M*A*S*H
The Carol Burnett Show
Cheers

We lost our first Golden Girl yesterday when Estelle Getty passed away at age 84. I used to watch Golden Girls with my grandparents when I was a kid, and it amazes me how much of the humor must have gone over my head at the
time. I’m not the only person my age who used to watch it, and it’s odd to think of a show about a bunch of old ladies appealing to 10 year olds.
Poor old Estelle suffered from Lewy’s Body Dementia, and it was this sickness that led to her untimely demise.
What does this have to do with songspeak, you ask? Well, I know myself and others have songspoken the Golden Girls theme song on many occasions. That, as well as Sophia’s spunk and sass, prompted me to post.
