SONGSPEAKyou shook us all night long |

It’s been almost a year since Katy Perry’s first appearance/performance on the Today Show. She was back on again today, once again trying to show what a unique rebel she is and trying to distance herself from her religious Christian past. She’s had a few singles since I Kissed a Girl came out, and she got to perform them all. Hot and Cold has been overplayed to death, so I won’t even bother with that one. I do quite enjoy the new one that’s been getting played, Waking Up in Vegas (which would have been a perfect theme song for the movie The Hangover, but that’s neither here nor there), and this clip of her performing it contains come of the most awkward moments and downright strange stuff I’ve ever seen:

Let’s take a look at some of the more notable moments, shall we?
At the 0:27 mark, please note the will-they-or-won’t-they handshake moment that results in Katy grabbing onto Matt’s hand in a very awkward way.
At 0:31, Matt Lauer asks her about her (as usual) ridiculous outfit.
At 1:07, Katy starts talking about bananas and implies something about dicks while practically grinding against Matt, then tries to make a joke about potassium as he ignores her shenanigans.
At 3:10, Al Roker looking like the biggest square on earth as she starts singing the song.
At 3:51, the girl with braces who looks about 12 or younger singing along to a song about getting wasted in Vegas. That’s appropriate.
At 4:21, the cameraman dancing and playing air guitar on the platform. Just wow.
I will say this, whenever Katy Perry’s on the Today Show, she sure doesn’t seem to disappoint in regards to a ridiculous appearance. That’s what I get for waking up and watching the Today Show, I suppose.

Last night, my wife Jo and I were listening to Songspeak’s Greatest Hits Volume 9 in my car. This particular volume includes Piss-Bottle Man by Mike Watt. I would call this a somewhat obscure song, as it’s not a song you hear very often. Jo obviously wasn’t familiar with it, because as he was singing the chorus (“ooo, ooo, ooo, piss-bottle man”), she asked if he was singing “kissed by a man”. Perhaps she thought this 1995 song was a companion to Jill Sobule’s 1995 hit, I Kissed a Girl (and a precursor to Katy Perry’s recent lesbionic offering). I told her what the real line was, but honestly, it makes less sense than her misheard version, so who knows what the hell Mike Watt was thinking. Anyway, here’s the video. Decide for yourself.
Coincidentally, on a side note, Songspeak’s Greatest Hits Volume 9 also contains Invisible Touch by Genesis for the exact reasons stated in this post.

X-Files and Californication star David Duchovny has admitted himself to a rehabilitation center for sex addiction. Many people seem surprised, but given his role on Californication, and his early work in the Showtime soft-porn series Red Shoe Diaries, I’m not all that shocked.
He has asked for respect and privacy for his family (including wife Tea Leoni), which is understandable. But one wonders how something like this happens. He must’ve kissed a girl. And liked it. A lot.
This probably also explains his ***spoiler alert*** steamy scenes with Gillian Anderson in the latest X-Files dud. I mean, movie.
Anyhow, I wish him well in his recovery. Let’s keep those boners in check, David. (And I know “boners” is crass, but blame Matt’s reference to Growing Pains in the last post for that one).

Katy Hudson has come a long way from her 2001 Christian album, Faith Won’t Fail. Even her name as changed– now she’s Katy Perry. Her song, I Kissed A Girl, has been cat-cat-cat-catching on for quite some time now. It annoys me… for various reasons.
First of all, don’t insult our intelligence, Katy Perry. You ripped off both the title and the premise from Jill Sobule. Trying to titillate listeners with such a ‘taboo’ subject isn’t anything new.
But it’s not like you’re intelligently trying to make some sort of statement about sexuality, you’re trying to appeal to the frat-boy fantasy of two chicks getting it on. Ur other song, Ur So Gay also used similar tired old gay stereotypes. I know you’re kidding around and everything, but girl, you know it’s true.
Katy Perry has come a long way from growing up as a good girl in a nice Christian household, we get it.
Here she is performing I Kissed A Girl on The Today Show on Friday, August 28th, 2008. Good wholesome family entertainment:

This songspeak is actually over 10 years old, but still one of my favorites. This was back when Matt and I worked in the Smith College bookstore and hung out with the Smithies.
Well, one day on my way to the bookstore, a squirrel ran out in front of my car and, alas, I ran it over. I was devastated as it was the first animal I’d ran over since getting my license. If I remember correctly, Matt arrived to work a little after me, and having taken the same road to get there, confirmed the kill.
Well, later that night, or maybe the next (who knows, it was 10 years ago!), Matt and I were hanging out with Lisa and Erica and perhaps others at my house, and in the midst of the evening, I announced, “I killed a squirrel”. Matt immediately responded with, “Isn’t that a Jill Sobule song?” referring to the 1995 Jill Sobule hit, I Kissed a Girl. That struck all of our funnybones and we all had a good laugh after such a tragic event.
I actually saw Jill Sobule perform a few years back at a NACA National Conference, and she did indeed perform this song, among others. I had forgotten that the amazing Fabio appears in the video!
Remember when his face got effed up by a bird on an amusement park ride?
