"When change comes around, men swim in me!"
John Mellencamp (John Cougar? John Cougar Mellencamp?) is a mainstay on mix 93.1, which I listen to daily in my office. Jack and Diane is one of his more popular hits, and I hear it at least a couple times a week. One of the lines from the song is, “change comes around real soon, makes us women and men”, but if I’m not paying attention, it sounds like he says, “makes us swimmin’ in men”. I know those aren’t the real lyrics, but if you listen, it really sounds like that’s what he’s saying. Listen for yourself! (As an aside, how oss are the handclaps at the beginning?):

When I was young lad, I used to think that the chorus of John Cougar Mellencamp’s Authority Song contained the lyrics, “I fight with Dorothy and Dorothy always wins”. It was one of those things where I was too young to know what authority even was and that he was actually singing “I fight authority, authority always wins”.
I forget when the moment of realization occurred later in life, but I was reminded of this song yesterday while Kristen and I were walking around the Pioneer Valley Flea Market and it was playing on the radio.

John McCain’s campaign has been using the Foo Fighters song, “My Hero” at rallies without the band’s permission.
“It’s frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. The saddest thing about this is that ‘My Hero’ was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song. We hope that the McCain campaign will do the right thing and stop using our song–and start asking artists’ permission in general!”
- Statement from Foo Fighter’s public relations firm, Nasty Little Man
This is not the first time this has happened, apparently.
The band Heart noticed that its song “Barracuda” was used for Sarah Palin events without permission.
John Mellencamp’s songs, “Our Country” and “Little Pink Houses” were used without permission.
Jackson Browne’s song “Running on Empty” was also used by the Republican party without consent. Jackson Browne has even filed suit against the party as well as the campaign, concerned that playing the song at an Ohio event implies his endorsement of McCain.
John Hall, a member of the 1970s group Orleans and now congressman, was unhappy with the campaign’s use of the Orleans song “Still The One” without his consent.

In an interesting move, the new AC/DC album, Black Ice will be released only at Wal-Mart stores and the band’s website. Way to stick it to the man, AC/DC.
I think what surprises me most is that over the years, Wal-Mart has banned albums by Sheryl Crow, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Goo Goo Dolls and books by John Stewart, George Carlin and others. These are products Wal-Mart considers to have the wrong values for their stores. And yet, AC/DC, a band who for decades has almost exclusively had songs about sex and booze makes the cut. Wal-Mart accounts for 10% of record sales domestically, so they have a huge influence. I wonder if AC/DC will sanitize this release.
AC/DC’s last album in 2000, Stiff Upper Lip, contained the brilliant Safe In New York City, a song which Jamie and I mock profusely for the number of times the words “I feel safe in New York City” are repeated.
Oh AC/DC. Like an old friend. If all their previous albums are any indication, I’m sure that this will fall under the category of good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll. I doubt anyone will be surprised by what it sounds like.
