In an interesting twist to the mystery of who sings background vocals on Kid Rock’s All Summer Long, we received a comment from Andre N. Jones indicating a case of mistaken identity.
On 09.17.08 andre wrote these pithy words:
Hey everybody,
I’m as shocked as everybody else! Although the background vocalist on the song has the same name as I, those vocals are not me. I wish I could claim that it was but it’s not. Thanks guys.
-Dre
What have we done? The biggest mistake has been made… and the search to identify the other Andre Jones, the person credited with singing background vocals on All Summer Long, continues.
But, mistake or no, we’re glad we had the chance to become more familiar with Andre N. Jones, A.K.A. Drizzrod, a spoken word musician who has a style all his own. He was good enough to answer a few questions for us.
SONGSPEAK: Being a prolific poet and spoken word artist, it must have surprised you to see that others mistakenly credit you for singing background vocals on Kid Rock’s All Summer Long.
ANDRE: It surely did surprise me but it was also very humbling. I mean, Kid Rock is a major act. I’d love to work with him…

This week brought us labor day, Gustav, and the passing of Don LaFontaine and Jerry Reed. Jon Bon Jovi is building some stuff in Newark, New Jersey, and Kid Rock is gung ho about the National Guard (not enough to enlist, though, I’ll bet). We also were reminded of some classic misheard lyrics. And while Matt professed his love for fajitas at On The Border, Jamie expressed his desire to live on the Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch later-in-life.
I wanna touch the light fajita in your eyes
Hootie & The Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranches
Snowman… You got yer ears on, good buddy?
She seems to have an invisible talk show
Who says you can’t build homes… in Newark?
In a world… without Don LaFontaine’s movie voice

Kid Rock, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and The Army National Guard are invading your cinema previews this September and October. I found this out when Kristen and I went to see Tropic Thunder this past weekend at the Garden in Greenfield, Massachusetts. With lyrics like, “Freedom ain’t so free” and “citizen soldier”, and some dramatic guitar solos… plus the fact that we were seeing a Ben Stiller movie– I actually thought it was a joke at first. But it’s not.
Kid Rock wrote the new song, ‘Warrior’, for a national recruitment campaign directed by Academy Award winning director, James Mangold for The National Guard. The commercial will air at movie theaters across the U.S. in September and October. Lucky you, moviegoer (and future recruit, I’m sure). To get you pumped up before basic training, why not dowload the song at NationalGuardWarrior.com
The song can basically be summed up this way: “America! Fuck Yeah!” but… (more…)

As we at Songspeak recently learned, it’s Andre N. Jones a.k.a. Drizzrod who sings the backup on Kid Rock’s song, All Summer Long, which samples Lynryd Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama as well as Warren Zevon’s Werewolves of London.
From Andre’s bio:
Andre’s style is a Gumbo. A Stew that combines Spoken Word with hip hop, Gospel, Funk and R&B. The effort is intended to probe important issues of current times while remaining musically entertaining.
Kind of weird that SO MANY PEOPLE thought that it was Bob Seger. We were definitely fooled here at Songspeak.

Kid Rock’s music video for All Summer Long is here also.
And while you’re at it, let us know how off the mark we were:

I’m ashamed to admit it, but yes, I do enjoy the new single by Kid Rock, All Summer Long. The first few times it came on mix 93.1, I thought it was Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon. Perhaps this is because it contains a sample from that song that runs throughout. Not only that, but the chorus is all about singing Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama. AND, I swear that’s Bob Seger singing background vocals. Although maybe it’s just someone meant to sound like him. I couldn’t find a definitive answer on that when I googled the hell out of it. And I think my favorite line is about “trying different things and smoking funny things“. Oh, the good old days.
So, a song ABOUT another song (Sweet Home Alabama), with Bob Seger (possibly) singing background over a Werewolves of London sample? It doesn’t get much more songspeak than that, my friends.
