Songspeak is sad to learn that actor Corey Haim, famous for his roles in popular 80s movies, The Lost Boys and License To Drive, has died of an apparent drug overdose. More recently, Haim and his frequent co-star and friend, Corey Feldman starred in an A&E reality series called The Two Coreys. Anyone who has watched the show knows that Corey Haim has struggled with drug addiction and alcohol throughout his adult life, while Corey Feldman has had his own issues as well. Needless to say, the two have had a tumultuous friendship.
Originally from Canada, Corey Haim was living in Los Angeles, California.

Michael Jackson, perhaps the biggest pop icon of our time, died suddenly yesterday in Los Angeles. The King Of Pop’s career and personal life took odd and controversial twists and turns in later years, but albums like Thriller absolutely defined our generation. He was a truly electrifying performer.

Last night was Conan O’Brien’s first night hosting The Tonight Show. Conan’s cold open was a segment that showed him making a checklist and forgetting to check off ‘Move to L.A.’
And then, a la Forest Gump, he just runs… from NYC to Los Angeles, running across bridges, busy roads, Wrigley Field, swimming, and even stopping at an antique doll museum…. all the while Surrender by Cheap Trick is playing in the background. (Mommy’s alright, Daddy’s alright, they just seem a little weird. Surrender, surrender, but don’t give yourself away)

Our friend Ethan (aka State Shirt) recently released his album, This Is Old, which contains a song called Fell Out of the Sky.
From StateShirt.com
Shot over the course of 6 days in the Los Angeles area. Directed and edited by Angela Heine, camera by Ben Clemons, FX and some more editing by me… The music was inspired by last words on the black box data recorder from Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 182 airplane crash, September 25, 1978.
Nicely done, State Shirt and crew. We noticed the “This Is It Baby” written on the cake you’re serving.

Former American Idol contestant Paula Goodspeed, who apparently had an unhealthy obsession with judge Paula Abdul, committed suicide not far from Abdul’s home in Los Angeles.
From abcnews.com:
Paula Goodspeed, 30, was found dead, an apparent suicide, Tuesday evening in her car, which was parked a few doors down from Abdul’s Los Angeles home. Reuters reported that prescription pills, along with CDs and pictures of Abdul, were found in the car.
“It appears to be a suicide by overdose,” Detective Robert Bub of the Los Angeles Police Department told Reuters.
Now, I must say, I usually feel like offing myself after watching any new episodes of American Idol, so she can hardly be blamed. And if it was an overdose of prescription drugs, it just sounds to me like she was imitating her idol, who is constantly effed up beyond coherence on some kind of pills and/or alcohol. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Here is Paula Goodspeed’s audition from the show:
In all seriousness, is anyone surprised? Many of the people who audition on American Idol aren’t exactly what I would call “stable”. And when you get ridiculed in front of (and by) the person you look up to the most, it’s enough to push a lot of these people over the edge. Just chalk this up as another reason I hate American Idol.
And joking aside, the friends and family of Paula Goodspeed have lost someone they love and care about. I wouldn’t wish what they’re going through on anyone. Our thoughts go out to them.

Walk The Line star, Joaquin Phoenix, announced last week at the premiere of Benicio Del Toro’s movie, Che, that he will no longer make any movies and is suspending his acting career to pursue his music. Phoenix learned to play guitar and sing for Walk The Line.
From the AP:
“It’s like greener pastures, you know what I mean?” Phoenix said Saturday. “And so, I’m just going to try and like, I’ll just be doing the other thing. … Hopefully, I will emotionally impact you with that, as well.”
Early last week in San Francisco, Joaquin mentioned his decision to Extra. The reporter thought he was joking.
Two Lovers, which also stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw will be Joaquin Phoenix’s last film.

When I read about this, I thought it was a joke, but it’s true. The newest commercials for FreeCreditReport.com feature Ed McMahon rapping. They will air throughout October. Does this mean that Eric Violette just isn’t cool enough with his own rap video for FreeCreditReport.com? (See the MSNBC article, “Sing It, FreeCreditReport.com guy!”)
From the AP:
The 85-year-old former “Tonight Show” sidekick will star in two viral rap videos for FreeCreditReport.com, a financial Web site owned by credit bureau Experian. The videos feature McMahon wearing a tracksuit, being chauffeured around Los Angeles in a Cadillac Escalade golf cart and waxing lyrical about his very public financial troubles.
“I knew I could sing the blues, but I didn’t know I could rap,” McMahon said Wednesday…
…After being joined by two scantily clad women, McMahon continues: “Got a bump from the media chumps, but that was temporary/Wife with bad credit was scary, so I got wise/I may have fallen, but I got back up/Now I’m back on the attack, like a ninja swinging nunchucks/I told the haters, ‘Go on, take a hike’/It’s my show now, and I can do what I like.”
We’ve seen the FreeCreditReport commercials where Eric Violette dresses up like a pirate in a seafood restaurant, rolls around in a used subcompact, marries his dreamgirl, and rides around on a bicycle.
And of course, here’s the latest rockstar rap video with Eric Violette:
Here’s to hoping McMahon’s rap skillz measure up, son. Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere’s Money.

Saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, Leroi Moore, died yesterday, August 19th, 2008 in Los Angeles.
In June, Moore severely injured himself in an ATV accident in Charlottesville, Virginia. Jeff Coffin, took his place for the remainder of the DMB tour. In July, Moore was re-hospitalized for “complications related to the accident”.
From the Dave Matthews Band official website:
We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.
Read the obit at L.A. Times. Our thoughts go out to all the DMB fans, the band, as well as Moore’s family and friends.
