  This commercial for GE Locomotives takes my breath away

  My wife Kristen and I saw this commercial for GE Locomotive while watching the Today Show on NBC this morning.  It features employees at the GE Locomotive plant in Erie, Pennsylvania performing their version of Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away”.

  It also features an all too rare appearance of the keytar.

  On this endless ocean finally lovers know no shame
  Turning and returning to some secret place inside

  Watching in slow motion as you turn to me and say

  Take my breath away
  My love

  Take my breath away

  ‘Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia cheesesteak

  Ah, the holidays. It’s that special time of year where we travel around to holiday parties and spent time with parents, relatives, etc. My wife Kristen and I have family all over the place: Pennsylvania, Long Island, Eastern Massachusetts, Western Massachusetts, Florida… all this involves long road trips in the car and many family functions.

  Last Christmas, Kristen and I decided to travel from N. Merrick, NY to Harrisburg, PA by way of Philadelphia, for the sole purpose of stopping at Jim’s Steaks on South Street for a cheesesteak.  It was a little over an hour out of the way, but totally worth it. We’re hoping to make this an every Christmas tradition, so both of us are looking forward to it this year and keeping our fingers crossed we can make it happen.

  For Thanksgiving weekend, besides traveling with my mom to Long Island and back (stopping at Ikea briefly for some Swedish meatballs), we also attended a party in Acton, Massachusetts for my grandmother who turned 90. After the party, my mom, Kristen, and I were a little zoned out in the car on the way home… reeling from all the family shmoozing we had to do. My mom was asleep in the back and Kristen was the passenger. I was the driver.

  Elton John’s, Philadelphia Freedom came on the radio and Kristen ever so subtly sang, “Philadelphia cheesesteak” whenever it was Elton’s turn to sing the actual words, “Philadelphia freedom”.

  Now all I can think about is the sweet sweet taste of a Jim’s Steak cheesesteak sandwich whenever I hear this song from now on.

  Journey to the Center of the Pennsylvania

  Kristen and I are heading back to her home-town of Palmyra, Pennsylvania this weekend, and Heather sent me an email earlier.

  Just wanted to wish you well on your trip to PA this weekend.

  What’s kind of weird was this coincidence.

  It’s funny that you sent this because Open Arms is currently playing in my earphones.

  Can you guess which one is me?

  We’re big fans of Photoshoppery here at Songspeak. I think it might be Heather’s fault.

  

  Oh, by the way, the title is a reference to Journey to the Center of the Earth. Funny thing about that is– If you weren’t near Iceland and needed to attempt any kind of travel to the center of the earth, Palmyra might be a good place to do this. It’s known for its sinkholes. They even have a restaurant called The Sinkhole Saloon.

  Another fun fact about Palmyra is that parts of the John Travolta movie, Lucky Numbers was shot there.

  John Travolta may not have been to the center of the earth, but he was in Battlefield Earth.

  

  Love is a Battlefield. At least that’s what Pat Benatar said.
