This morning on the way to work, I passed a billboard that I’ve probably passed countless times before. For some reason, I never really noticed it like I did today. It was for Basketville in Putney, Vermont. And all I could think of is that right out front, Justin Timberlake is dressed up in a giant ridiculous basket costume, pressing play on a boombox, singing basket-related lyrics to some kind of current pop hit like Ke$ha’s Tik Tok, and then shouting, “Bring it on down to Basketville!” All thanks to the Omeletteville skit from years ago, and then the follow-up, Homelessville:
Yes, these are the things that go through my head on the drive to work…

The Betty White episode of SNL was so good. Betty was in almost every sketch and just absolutely killed it. Even some of the weirder sketches were saved by Betty White’s superb comedic timing. Unfortunately, there were a few long-time favorites that didn’t get a chance to make it to the actual show.
One of the unseen sketches (except by people attending the rehearsal show) was a Debbie Downer sketch featuring Rachel Dratch and all the rest of the Will-Ferrel-era SNL alum that came back for the special Mother’s Day show: Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. It also features Kristen Wiig and of course, a small role by Betty White as Debbie Downer’s grandma.
Another rehearsal only sketch that they did was Bronx Beat, featuring Maya Rudolph and (a pregnant) Amy Poehler:

So if you’re like me, if you’re home on a Saturday night you get settled in for Saturday Night Live, convincing yourself that you’re actually going to stay up to watch it until 1am. This week Betty White is hosting, with musical guest Jay-Z (or as Betty says, “Jayze”). May 8th, 2010 = SNL history.
I have a feeling this will be one of those memorable episodes and will likely feature a bunch of cameos. Of course, there will also be the obligatory Golden Girls skit. Who will play Bea Arthur’s character? I predict Andy Samberg.
NBC has some promos for this upcoming weekend’s episode featuring Betty White and Kristen Wiig.

Imagine my joy when SNL featured a Digital Short this past weekend of my favorite track off the Lonely Island CD, Boombox. Julian Casablancas from the Strokes appears, as he provided vocals for the song. The video pretty much tells the story I envisioned in my head, and any song and/or video that references the 1990 hit Do the Bartman is aces in my book.

The Jennifer Lopez classic Love Don’t Cost a Thing was on Mix 93.1 earlier today while I was working, and it reminded me of when the song first came out. I’ve always thought she says, “think I work at CVS, I don’t” at one point. I know those aren’t the actual lyrics, though. In fact, I don’t think I know what the actual lyrics are. After a quick google search, I’ve determine they must be, “think you gotta keep me iced, you don’t”.
Regardless, it’s a stupid song. As if J-Lo would work at a Consumer Value Store. And did anyone see her performances on SNL recently? What was THAT all about?

That’s right, The Golden Girls‘ own Rose Nylund… the incomparable Betty White, is slated to host the May 8th “Mother’s Day episode” of SNL! That this didn’t happen sooner is perhaps life’s biggest mystery.
Betty’s self-deprecating humor and quick wit is sure to be a great match for Saturday Night Live, and we’re excited to see what is likely going to be one of the more memorable SNL episodes.
According to People, “…the special Mother’s Day episode will also reunite six former female SNL cast members, most of whom happen to be moms: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch.” While the 88 year old Betty White is not actually a mom herself, she is perhaps “a mother of great comedy”. That’s good enough for us.
How did this happen? A Facebook fan page titled “Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!” creeped up soon after a Snickers commercial featuring Betty White getting tackled in a muddy football game aired during the 2010 Super Bowl. A groundswell of support and petitioning of Lorne Michaels made it all happen!

Imagine being at a high school dance, singing along with everybody else…” and a little bit softer now… and a little bit softer now…”
Lately it seems like I’m running into more and more people who just can’t tone it down a notch and use their inside voices. It reminded me of this awesome Will Ferrell character from SNL. How many people do you know who are like this?
How dare you! I have a voice related medical condition!

The Snickers commercial featuring the incomparable Betty White and the adorable Abe Vigoda was probably one of the best commercials shown during the 2010 Super Bowl. It really looked like they got tackled pretty hard! Featuring their new tagline, “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry“, I can only hope this is a sign of more commercials featuring Betty White.
Betty White has always been hilarious, from her days on Golden Girls to her various appearances on talk shows and small roles on tv shows. Betty White fans have recently created a Facebook fan page called Betty White to Host SNL (Please?)! which has over 70,000 fans and counting. We at Songspeak agree. She’d be a perfect SNL host.

Pretty amazing spoof of Alec Baldwin’s Oscar Winning performance in Glengarry Glen Ross if you ask me. I love how he accidentally slips into the original script for a second when he goes through the ABCs.

Patrick Swayze lost his battle with cancer yesterday, and though he will be recalled for his roles in Dirty Dancing, Roadhouse, and Ghost, his appearance on SNL is probably my favorite memory of his career.
Set to Working For The Weekend by Loverboy, this amazingly choreographed performance by Mr. Patrick Swayze and the great Chris Farley always brings a smile to our faces here at Songspeak.
