The guy who writes the SNL digital short songs

    posted by songspeak | 05.26.09 | permalink | 1 comment

asatacconeHe gave you Dick In A Box, Mother Lover, and Lazy Sunday and is the brother of Jorma Taccone, one of the three Lonely Island dudes. His name is Asa Taccone, and he’s also doing music for the MTV Movie Awards airing May 31st, 2009.

Asa Taccone is part of the Black Iris collective, an agency that creates music for advertisements and the entertainment industry. With offices in NYC, Los Angeles, and Richmond, VA, Black Iris has also started their own singles label. The label has been lucrative, selling longer versions of the songs you may hear in something like the newest Cadillac ad for example. Other Black Iris work includes compositions for the ESPN X Games, Gatorade, and Hummer.

Creativity recently posted an interview with Asa…

What’s the process for composing the music for the digital shorts? Is it as hectic as it seems?
Completely. It really is just as hectic as anything you’ve heard. I’ve gone and done some of the work in New York and when I see how SNL is put together, it amazes me that anything is funny on that show. It’s so last minute. For “Mother Lover” Justin was re-recording vocals about an hour and a half before the show started. It’s because we always have to send stuff to NBC’s standards and practices department, and often it’s like, “Uh, no that can’t go on air.” So we have to change things all throughout the process.
It’s so hectic that the network didn’t even know who did the music for “Dick in a Box.” My brother gave me $60 for that track. My name didn’t really come up until the Emmys and someone asked. It’s just so chaotic, but it works.

Usually the process is, my brother will call and give us the general joke idea, and that changes about four or five times in a four hour period until they land on an idea that they think is funny. Then we send them a bunch of tracks and they’ll either pick something they like and just start writing to that or, when it’s more organized like in the case of “Dick in a Box” and “Mother Lover,” they give us a more specific outline. For “Dick in a Box” they wanted a cheesy, 90s, Color Me Badd type track. Then we just go from there, and there’s usually so little time to get everything done.

Drew Campbell and I did “Mother Lover” and I got the call on the Monday at about 3:20 a.m., L.A. time, and all those guys were in the studio with Justin Timberlake, just writing and trying to figure things out. It seems like that’s a lot of time, but so much changes right up to when the show goes on the air.

    (more here)

Here’s a partial list of some of the things Asa Taccone has been involved with on SNL (from imDB:

      – Dane Cook/James Blunt (3 December 2005) – composer (additional music)
      - Jack Black/Neil Young (17 December 2005) – Soundtrack (writer: “Lazy Sunday”), Composer
      - Peter Sarsgaard/The Strokes (21 January 2006) – Soundtrack (writer: “Young Chuck Norris”), composer (additional music)

I’m a mother lover, you’re a mother lover, we should love each other’s mothers

    posted by songspeak | 05.11.09 | permalink | 3 comments

motherloverAndy Samberg and Justin Timberlake offered up an eyebrow raising follow up to Dick In a Box, this time a wonderfully inappropriate Mother’s Day seduction song called Motherlover. Susan Sarandon plays Samberg’s mom and Patricia Clarkson plays Timberlake’s mom. Each of them tries to seduce the other one’s mom as a gift for Mother’s Day. Lyrics after the video.

Dick In a Box actually won a fricken Emmy. I wonder if this will follow in its footsteps. Motherlover was directed by The Lonely Island dudes, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone.

    The lyrics to Motherlover:

    Andy Samberg: Oh dang…
Justin Timberlake: What is it dawg?
    AS: I forgot it’s Mother’s Day
JT: Didn’t get a gift for her
AS: Other plans got in the way
    She’ll be so disappointed
JT: Damn I forgot it too
AS: This could have been avoided
Both: What the hell are we gonna do?

JT: My mom’s been so forlorn ever since my daddy left.
    AS: COLD
JT: No one to hold her tight, life has put her to the test.
AS: I know just what you mean, my mom’s been so sad and gray
    JT: Word
AS: My dad can’t satisfy her in the bedroom ever since he passed away

    Both: Hold up
AS: You thinkin’ what I’m thinkin’?
JT: I’m thinkin’ I’m thinkin’ too
    Both: Slow up
AS: What time is it dawg?
JT: It’s time for a switcharoo
Both: We both love our moms, women with grown women needs
I say we break ‘em off and show ‘em how much they really mean

    CHORUS:

    ’cause I’m a mother lover, you’re a mother lover
We should fuck each other’s mothers
    Fuck each other’s moms
I’m pushin’ that lady where you came out as a baby
ain’t no doubt that shit is crazy
    Fuckin’ each others moms
’cause every Mother’s Day needs a Mother’s Night
If doing it is wrong, I don’t wanna be right
I’m callin’ on you ’cause I can’t do it myself
to me your like a brother, so be my Motherlover

AS: I’m layin’ in the cut waitin’ for your mom clutchin’ on this lube and roses
JT: I got my digital camera, I’m gonna make your momma do a million poses
AS: They will be so surprised
JT: We are so cool and thoughtful
AS: Can’t wait to pork your mom
JT: I’m gonna be the syrup, she can be my waffle
    Both: Sho’ Nuff
JT: My mother loves bubble bath with chamomile
    Both: Straight up
    AS: Give it to my mom d- d- d- d- d- d- doggie-style
    Both: This the perfect plan
    For a perfect Mother’s Day
They have to rename this one
All up under the covers day

    CHORUS:

    ’cause I’m a mother lover, you’re a mother lover
We should fuck each other’s mothers
    Fuck each other’s moms
I’m pushin’ that lady where you came out as a baby
ain’t no doubt that shit is crazy
    Fuckin’ each others moms
    AS: Break it down
It would be my honor to be your new stepfather
JT: It would be my honor to be your new stepfather
AS: I’ll let you do my mother, make me another brother
and I’m gonna do your mother
    I’ll never use a rubber
    JT: OH

’cause every Mother’s Day needs a Mother’s Night
If doing it is wrong, I don’t wanna be right
I’m callin’ on you ’cause I can’t do it myself
to me you’re like a brother, so be my mother lover
They blessed us both with the gift of life
She brought you in this world so I’m a sex her right
This is the second best idea that we’ve ever had
The choice can be no other
    Be my mother lover

    Happy Mother’s Day

Where do you where do you go, my lovely? Uhhhh, McDonald’s, I guess?

    posted by jamie | 04.24.09 | permalink | 2 comments

I had lunch at McDonald’s today.

And let’s see, I didn’t drive my Delorean there. I didn’t turn a giant frozen donkey wheel prior to leaving the office. I didn’t even get in a phone booth or anything. So why was I transported back to 1996 when I set foot in the restaurant?

As I sat down and got ready to sink my teeth into my double-quarter pounder with cheese meal and its two sear-sizzled grade-A beef patties of goodness, what do I hear playing over the speakers? Why, Where Do You Go? by No Mercy of course. You’d know the song if you heard it. It was one of those dance hits, the style of which was uber-popular in the mid to late 90′s. In fact, until just now, I thought No Mercy was responsible for the following, but it was really Haddaway:

All those friggin’ dance techno groups sounded the same, didn’t they? And who hasn’t bopped their head along to this kind of music like Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan? I’m not sure if that falls under the category of songspeak or dancespeak, but it’s definitely been ingrained in our culture thanks to Saturday Night Live.

And while we’re of the subject of techno dance music, let’s have a (much belated) moment of silence for Melanie Thornton, former lead singer of La Bouche. We never had a chance to be her lover. Be her lover.

Don’t get me started… Don’t EVEN get me started!

    posted by matt | 02.11.09 | permalink | 1 comment

Someone said “Don’t get me started” when I was complaining about something today, and it reminded me of this fantastic Molly Shannon SNL sketch, “Jeanie Darcy at St. Joseph’s Hospital“.

Really reminds me of Paula Poundstone. Why people think she’s funny I’ll never know. Don’t even get me started.

“We’re The Dancers!” directed by Paul Rudd

singleladies2When Paul Rudd “directed” the parody of Beyonce‘s Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) on SNL awhile back, we thought we were going to pee our pants. Featuring ”The Dancers”, Justin Timberlake, Andy Samberg, and Bobby Moynihan, here’s most of the skit here for your viewing pleasure.

It’s been a little hard to find. She is…. Sasha Fierce.

McGruber/PepSuber and Richard Dean Anderson… in a Super Bowl commercial?

    posted by matt | 02.02.09 | permalink | comment?

As a childhood MacGyver fan, the McGruber sketches that have been airing on SNL for quite awhile now are amusing to me. This past weekend, the following aired during the Steve Martin hosted episode of Saturday Night Live:

I was amused by Pepsi’s “Refresh Everything” endorsement, though a little confused when I saw this same sketch aired during Super Bowl XLIII. Are Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, and Richard Dean Anderson (who looks like he’s showing his age) that hard up for cash?

Doogie Howser, M.D. theme with SNL symphony orchestra

    posted by matt | 01.16.09 | permalink | 7 comments

doogiehowserWhen Neil Patrick Harris hosted this past weekend’s Saturday Night Live, the SNL Digital Short was nothing short of awesome.

It features NPH on keyboards playing the theme to his hit tv show from his (and ours) youth, Doogie Howser, M.D. The rest of the SNL cast backs him up as his orchestra.

The single tear he cries at the end really makes it.

Neil Patrick Harris seems to really have fun with his image as Doogie Howser. Check out this Old Spice commercial where he introduces himself as a former make-believe doctor… a doctor for pretend.

SNL Digital Shorts. They’re just awesome. The latest, Jizz In My Pants, follows a long line of hilarious Andy Samberg-penned gems.

Appearances by Jamie Lynn Sigler (as the cashier), Molly Sims (the model), Justin Timberlake (the janitor), and Jorma Taccone from The Lonely Island.

Justin Timberlake performs an entire SNL during Weekend Update

    posted by jamie | 11.19.08 | permalink | 2 comments

I didn’t get to watch Saturday Night Live until last night because we had DVR’ed it, and I was most impressed by Justin Timberlake’s performance on Weekend Update. Lamenting the fact that he had to cancel his hosting duties for the Thanksgiving episode of SNL, he decided to perform the whole episode in just a few minutes.

Highlights include him “bringin’ turkey back”, Turkeyville, the Barry Gibb talk show, and his Michael McDonald impression.

If only every episode of Saturday Night Live could be as amusing as JT’s consolidated performance…

    clownpenis.fart

    posted by jamie | 11.03.08 | permalink | comment?

Matt’s recent SNL commercial-related post has inspired me to think of past classic Saturday Night Live commercials and ad parodies.

One of the favorites around our household, and still referenced if we see a commercial featuring a product or service with an overly complicated web address, is the following:

Either Jo or I will undoubtedly mention clownpenis.fart when we see an ad with a ridiculous website. And it cracks us up every time.
