My wife and I were grocery shopping at Stop and Shop the other day and talking about how it had been a long while since we had a nice boxed macaroni and cheese like Annie’s. When I was younger, I used to be a Kraft man, but once I was given Annie’s, I never went back. Actually that’s not true. I went back plenty. In fact I’m pretty sure macaroni and cheese was THE favorite food of my yoot. It didn’t matter if it was Kraft, Annie’s, generic boxed, homemade, WHATEVS! I just found it delectable.
So looking over our options, I pointed out Shells in White Cheddar and started singing to the tune of Nights in White Satin by The Moody Blues. I’m pretty sure this goes on the list of things I make myself laugh with that my wife finds only mildly amusing while rolling her eyes at me.
You’re welcome for forever honoring your song with my awesome songspeak, Moody Blues.

Back in high school, I worked part time at Stop and Shop. I worked there in the summers through college, as well. I’ve made a couple friends along the way as a result, and worked with quite a variety of people there over the years. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of the woman who is the origin of this story, but we’ll call her Barbara, because that might be right. But probably not. Anyway, we were talking about music or whatever, and for some reason we started talking about Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton. Perhaps it was playing in the store at the time. Anyway, she told me how her young daughter thought the lyrics were “way down cellar”, and I thought this was funny, because it kind of sounds like that’s what he’s saying.

"Help! It's cold down here, and I'm lonely..."

This goes back to when I was in high school. 107.3 WAAF was our radio station of choice in those days, and this occurred late one night when I was either driving home after a night out or a late shift at Stop and Shop.
Lithium by Nirvana was the latest single all the rock stations were playing by them, and the chorus has Kurt Cobain singing, “I like it, I’m not gonna crack, I love you, I’m not gonna crack”. Various phrases are repeated, but he says the “I’m not gonna crack” bit quite a few times.
Anywho, it was nearing the end of the song, the chorus was being repeated, and randomly in the chorus, the DJ butt in and said “suck my crack” over Kurt singing “gonna crack”. It caught me off guard, and I thought it was hilarious. It was really late, but I don’t think I was imagining things. It really happened. Didn’t it?

So a few weeks ago, we were grocery shopping at Stop and Shop, and I was looking for my weekly ice cream fix. Usually we’ll get whatever’s on sale, but prefer Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen-Dazs. Haagen-Dazs won out that trip, as it was on sale, but something seemed odd when I put my Chocolate Chocolate Chip in the cart. I held it up to Jo and said, “It seems smaller (that’s what she said)”. It didn’t say “one pint” on the container, but 14 oz. And it now listed only 3 1/2 servings per container instead of 4.
Something seemed fishy in the freezer section. I checked again, and some of the other flavors were listed at one pint. As the weeks went on, the pint containers became more and more rare, at both Big Y and Stop and Shop. What was happening was apparent. Haagen-Dazs was reducing the size of their standard pint containers. This would be all well and good…IF THEY WEREN’T CHARGING THE SAME PRICE FOR THE SMALLER CONTAINERS!
Upon researching, I’ve discovered that yes, they’ve admitted to the smaller packaging, but don’t F your consumers in the A by charging the same for a 14 oz. container as a 16 oz. container. I don’t want to pay for 2 oz. of ice cream that’s simply…vanished.
Ben & Jerry’s knows where it’s at. Their containers still proudly display “1 Pint”. And their prices are comparable to Haagen-Dazs’s, so you’re getting more bang for your buck. Or more ice cream for your buck, as it were.
So don’t be fooled. Don’t let Haagen-Dazs rape you bloody. The ice cream consuming public deserves better.
