Where ice cream makes the meal

    posted by matt | 10.17.08 | permalink | 2 comments

The latest “I wanna go to Friendly’s” commercials that have been airing lately are really catchy, and though I haven’t been to Friendly’s in a very long time (save for a recent experience in which my friends and I made a horrible horrible mistake), they ALMOST make me want to go. Then again, I’m not sure I want to patronize a place that encourages kids to break into their stores late at night.

    Just look at these lyrics…

We snuck into friendly’s late last night
    I wanna go to Friendly’s, yeah-yeah
We went to make the menu right
    I wanna go to Friendly’s, yeah-yeah

Mini mozzarellas and dippin’ chicken too, cheeseburger sliders, and soda that is blue
Sundaes we designed were in the deal for you
Where ice cream makes the meal!
    I want to go to Friendly’s, yeah-yeah

These little brats are so demanding!

They would like to point out that some adults are way into going to Friendly’s also. Given the choice, though, this particular adult avoids Friendly’s most of the time. Still, I find myself singing “mini mozzarellas” over and over again whenever I’ve seen the commercial. Also, speaking of nuts (that’s an ice cream sundae joke for all youze out there), the song and vibe vaguely remind me of the five dollar footlong song for Subway.

    songspeakweek

We posted a bunch of stuff this past week. Some posts made us laugh, some posts made us cry. When we got together over some burritos and diet pepsi last night to plot our takeover of the internet, we realized it may be awhile before global domination ensues. One thing is for certain however, songspeak is here to stay.

Here are some of our recent faves.
    - Dungarees make me feel fine
    - Don’t insult our intelligence, Subway!
    - Comcast TV ads with terrible, yet clever puns
    - AC/DC: They’ve got the biggest balls of the Wal-Mart
    - Oh, What a feeling! Toyota!
    - New FreeCreditReport.com commercial with Eric Violette on a bicycle

Whatever will next week bring us? Oh, the headline is a reference to this movie, in case you were wondering.

    Don’t insult our intelligence, Subway!

    posted by jamie | 08.20.08 | permalink | 4 comments

I know we’ve been posting a lot about commercials lately here at Songspeak, but Subway has raised my ire like my ire’s never been raised before.

Last year, Subway ran a Scrabble promotion (similar to McDonald’s Monopoly promotion), and aired the following commercial for it:

This year, Subway is running the same promotion. However, since the last time, they now also have their Five Dollar Footlong promotion. Instead of coming up with a new ad campaign for this year’s Scrabble promotion, or even shooting a new commercial, Subway gives us this:

Do they think we’re not smart enough to realize it’s the EXACT SAME commercial? Or that they poorly photoshopped ads for five dollar footlongs all over the place?

We’re not stupid, Subway, so don’t treat us like we are. I would expect this kind of behavior from Arby’s, but not you.

Is my rage at Subway justified?

    Oh, What a feeling! Toyota!

    posted by matt | 08.19.08 | permalink | comment?

This past Saturday, August 16th, there was a big picnic at Nonotuck Park in Easthampton to celebrate mine and Kristen’s recent nuptials. For a photo project, Kristen’s friend Kelly suggested a group of us jump in sync while she set her camera on a timer. We must have jumped twenty or thirty times in order to get this shot.

My wisecracker cousin Chris came over and said, “What… did someone just get a toyota or something?”. He was referring to the Toyota commercials of the mid-80s, when Toyota’s slogan was “Oh what a feeling!” and commercials featured excited people jumping.

Does anyone besides me and Chris remember these?

John Cena played football for Springfield College in the late 90s with my cousin. Click to enlarge the pic.

Speaking of my cousin Chris, he attended Springfield College and played football there with WWE star, John Cena. You can’t see him? He’s top row, third from the left, number 57. My cousin Chris is bottom row in the middle, number 78.

Did you know that besides all the WWE stuff, and the Subway commercials John Cena has been in, he recorded a rap album with his cousin, Tha Trademarc in 2005? The first track, “The Time is Now” was even used by Cena as his entrance music.

My cousin Chris and I, however, have not yet recorded OUR rap album. Here’s to hoping it ‘drops’ soon, y’all.

Five… Five Dollar… Five Dollar Footlong

    posted by matt | 07.09.08 | permalink | 3 comments

It’s cat-cat-catching on. The Subway five dollar footlong song is one of the catchiest jingles of late on the television. The repetition of the message, “five dollar footlong”, like Head On! Apply directly to the forehead, is key. Who are the ad wizards who came up with this one? Why, it’s MMB, who also has done ads for Meow Mix and Sam Adams.

Catchy isn’t it? You won’t be able to get it out of your head now.

Here’s a pretty amusing low budge vid from a guy trying to come to grips with the theme song being stuck in his head.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is combo no. 5

    posted by matt | 04.10.08 | permalink | 1 comment

jared_fogle-720570 For the longest time, whenever I went to Subway, I tended to order Combo Number 5 (which is the Italian B.M.T. in case you’re curious), so if anyone happened to be with me, I started singing, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is combo numba fahv”, thinking I’m absolutely hilarious (even though most people just roll their eyes). Even if I’m alone, I think it (songthink?). Every time.

Lately it’s come to my attention that they have gotten rid of the order-by-number system. Stupid Jared Fogle. He ruins everything. Anyway, this is a absolutely hilarious reference to the Lou Bega song, Mambo No. 5. A little bit of something and something else.
