Gidget, the Taco Bell chihuahua, has died

Taco Bell’s chihuahua Gidget, the one made famous by the Yo Quiero Taco Bell commercials, has died at the age of 15.

Farewell, Gidget. You introduced the chalupa and the gordita to me, and promoted that 90’s Godzilla movie that I wound up seeing. I will never forget you.

I’ll be pouring a little baja blast Mountain Dew on the curb in your memory.

Taco Bell likes Pina Coladas

There’s a new commercial for Taco Bell, featuring their new Pina Colada Fruitista Freeze, that showcases the very essence of songspeak. The commercial utilizes the 70’s classic Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes. The pure genius of this commercial is that it features regular people singing about their day to the tune of the song.

I think my favorite part is when the douchebag boss sings “ba ba bow ba ba bow”, fistbumps his employee, then blows it up.

After McDonald’s and Burger King’s latest efforts, the fast food commercial has become a whole new bag of potatoes. Congrats, Taco Bell, on stepping up your game and bringing the commercial songspeak to a whole new level.

The origin of the KFC Colonel revealed

In case you haven’t noticed, we’re big fans of fast food here at songspeak. The recent opening of a Taco Bell/KFC hybrid in my hometown has been one of the greatest moments of my life. So imagine my surprise when I saw that there is a movie coming out chronicling the origins of the KFC Colonel, starring none other than Mel Gibson:

It looks like a real nailbiter. KFC appears to be releasing their own movie in response, but I must say, it’s not nearly as clever nor funny as the previous video.

Lately I’ve been seeing tv commercials for an AutoTrader.com featuring Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult. You know, the ones where “the giant guy is looking at the cars?” as Jamie said to me over an IM to me this morning. I was having a hard time remembering which of the plethora of auto sites (Carfax, Vehix, Cars.com, etc.) it actually was.

Whenever I think about Godzilla (which… don’t worry, doesn’t happen often) I think about the time when Jamie won a 4-pack of tickets to a showing of Godzilla 2000 at Cinemark.

Jamie, (his fiance at the time, but now) wife Jo, myself, and my dad went to see this one very special evening.

Godzilla 2000, or Gojira ni-sen mireniamu as it’s known in Japan, is Takao Okawara’s version of the 1954 classic Godzilla. And even though there were films after the 1954 version, this storyline ignores that. It’s all about a UFO invading Tokyo and Godzilla fighting with it.

It’s interesting that this movie was made and released in 1999 in Japan. Remember all the Y2K crap that people were freaking out about?

Anyway, this is not to be confused with the really terrible Hollywood-i-fied version of Godzilla in 1998ish that Taco Bell sponsored. Taco Bell and the damn chihuahua dog in all their tv commercials. Oh, you don’t remember “I think I need a bigger box”? Jamie and I have been known to quote this from time to time even still.

The new pizza crepe taco pancake chili bag… only at Taco Town!!

The Taco Town!!! parody on SNL was one of the more memorable fake tv commercials (“Pizza?! Now that’s a taco!”). It was a spoof on Taco Bell’s products like the Cheesy Gordita Crunch (delicious) and the Double Layer Taco (also delicious).

Kristen and I went with a group of friends to Fitzwilly’s last night. We started talking to Ethan and Angela (who live in L.A.) about mexican food chains we don’t have on the East Coast, like Del Taco and El Pollo Loco. This skit came up in conversation. Ethan then did a rather good impression of Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Andy Samberg excitedly yelling “Taco Town!!!” from the skit.

And of course, you guessed it– due to the awesomeness and popularity of the sketch, some hooligans actually attempted to make the Taco Town taco and posted a video of it on the internets.
