I just heard Natalie Imbruglia’s version of Torn on the radio at work, and I was reminded of the controversy this song caused (mainly amongst Matt) when it first came out in 1998. Most of you have probably heard this song. But how many of you know it’s a cover?
YES! The band Ednaswap originally wrote and released the song in 1995. They’ve recorded a couple different versions of it, but for some reason, when Natalie Imbruglia released her version, no one ever acknowledged that it was a cover. This got under the skin of Matt, because he was a fan of Ednaswap and thought that Natalie Imbruglia shouldn’t be getting the credit for a song she didn’t write. Ironically enough, there is one line that appears in her version that doesn’t appear in the original version, and that line is “my inspiration has run dry”. Indeed.
If MTV, VH1, or any of the thousands of radio stations had acknowledged that it was a cover, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. But they all were part of the grand conspiracy. Some of us know better, though.
And here’s hoping Natalie Imbruglia gets what’s coming to her.

John Mayer is sporting a new haircut these days, apparently satisfied with fulfilling his dream of an “authentic ’80s haircut”. From a May 1, 2008 post on his blog:
Today I set off on my newest project; to grow and maintain an authentic ’80s style feathered haircut. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time and I’m very excited to bring this amazing look into today’s pop culture landscape. The feathered cut projects an attitude of ease and quiet confidence that seems to have all but eluded our generation.
This is a work in progress, and as my hair grows longer it will serve to become a more stirring and poignant statement.
And now it seems he’s shaved his head, buzz cut style. Some people say he looks like Jim Carrey. Oh… If you care to write a haiku about his hair, People magazine has the challenge.
Remember when he grew his hair out awhile ago? Eesh.

Love or hate his music, John Mayer can be a pretty amusing dude. He posts ridiculous videos on the internet, performs stand-up routines at comedy clubs, and generally has a good time with his media image. But I think one of the more memorable videos for me was from 2004’s John Mayer Has a TV Show which ran on VH1. It features an anonymous John Mayer in a bear suit interviewing his unsuspecting fans in a parking lot.
